What's Your Attachment Style in Love?

A free, 12-question quiz for women dating again after 40. Answer for how you usually feel in romantic relationships, not how you think you should feel.

How it works

Adult attachment is usually measured on two dimensions: anxiety (how much you worry about rejection or being left) and avoidance (how uneasy you feel with closeness and depending on someone). Your answers place you near one of four patterns: secure, anxious, avoidant, or fearful-avoidant. The questions are our own, written for this quiz and inspired by the research behind the ECR-R questionnaire (Fraley, Waller & Brennan, 2000).

01When the man I'm seeing is slow to text back, my mind goes straight to what I might have done wrong.
02I'd rather not let a partner see how I really feel underneath.
03I worry that once someone truly gets to know me, he'll lose interest.
04Leaning on a partner when I'm having a hard time comes naturally to me.
05I need a lot of reassurance before I believe a partner really cares about me.
06When someone wants to be very close, part of me starts looking for the door.
07I rarely lie awake wondering whether a partner is going to leave.
08I'd rather sort out my problems alone than ask the man I'm dating for help.
09If a partner seems distant, I feel a strong pull to fix it right away.
10Talking with a partner about what I need and how I feel is fairly easy for me.
11I think about the relationship, and where it's going, far more than I'd like to.
12When things start getting serious, I feel an urge to slow everything down or pull back.

Please read: this quiz is for education and self-reflection only. It is not a psychological test, a diagnosis, or therapy, and a short quiz can't capture the whole of who you are. Attachment patterns can shift over time and with different partners. If relationships are causing you real distress, a licensed therapist can help.

About this quiz

Is this quiz the same as the ECR-R?

No. The ECR-R is a 36-item research questionnaire. Our 12 questions are original wording built on the same two dimensions, anxiety and avoidance, so treat your result as a starting point for reflection, not a measurement.

Can your attachment style change after 40?

Yes. Research suggests attachment security can grow, especially through relationships and situations that build confidence and safe dependence. On average, attachment anxiety is also lower in middle and older adulthood than in young adulthood.
